It was a game of chance, but the result was the most thrilling sporting event of the year.
The match between South Africa and England was played with a few hundred spectators in the packed South African Stadium, with a TV audience of over 2 million.
The first ball was dropped.
The second ball was run through the crowd, and the third ball was hit into the air, in front of a cheering South African crowd.

The first ball in the fourth was picked up, and run through again.
The crowd roared.
Then came the first shot of the match.
The ball was caught by a teammate.
He threw the ball to the ground.
The other teammate picked it up.
The player then took the ball back and threw it at the pitch, in the hope that it would go over.
But the ball was missed by the pitch.
The ball bounced off the edge of the pitch and fell into the stands.
The South African players then took their time, trying to get the ball into the ground, but it bounced away.
A few seconds later, a South African player threw it in the air and it flew to the right-hand side of the field.
South Africa went on to score the second goal of the game, the ball being hit into a crease.
The game ended 3-2.
There were no further replays of the incident.
It was the only time that the game was contested in full.
